Growing Together: Prepping Home Garden Beds

Tips to Grow a Healthy Garden

This week our partner, Iron Ox Farm, shares some tips on prepping home garden beds for spring time planting!

  1. Wait for the soil to warm

  2. Gently loosen the soil

  3. Add fertilizer and/or compost

  4. Incorporate the fertilizer/compost

  5. Plant

In addition, farmer Alex added, “If you really want to take your gardening to the next level, consider getting your soil tested. It is relatively cheap and easy and provides lots of valuable information. By knowing exactly what your soil’s nutrient deficiencies or excesses are you can more accurately add fertilizers. This will help prevent you from adding too much of a certain nutrient that you don’t need which can be costly, wasteful and potentially harmful to the surrounding ecosystem.”

NNS and Iron Ox are happy to answer any questions you have, such as the best fertilizer or compost for your garden. Let us know how we can help!
